Section 33 - On the Description of Setting Up the Feast of Pleasure and Preparing the Song of Joy

Original content

English translation

At night when he emptied his heart of all work, He played the backgammon of pleasure with companions. He adorned a banquet-hall like paradise, And called for musicians of houri-like form. When his brain grew warm with wine, He removed the veil of modesty from the midst. Sometimes he would harmonize with the storyteller, Sometimes he would compose melodies with the minstrel. His 'tan tan' rhythm, from sugar-shattering lips, Breathed soul into the body, like the Messiah. Sometimes he became a fellow traveler of the flute player, Turning the reed's sting into sweet sugarcane with his lips. He mixed the cry of the flute with sugar, Pouring sugar into the lap of the listener's ear. Sometimes he took the harp from the harpist, Making the burning tune sharp. He cast fresh hazelnut-like fingertips upon the dry string, Throwing sparks into both the wet and the dry. Sometimes, like an infant child, holding the lute In his lap, with the wounding of ear-tuning, He aroused painful lamentations, Shedding blood from the eyelashes of mature elders. Sometimes his voice became like a nightingale in the ghazal, Sometimes he clapped hands in musical verse and performance. Every night this was his work until dawn, In this manner he passed his time with companions.
