Original content

English translation

It has been ages in this ancient temple That the string of my poetry has been tied to the lute of speech. Every moment I play a new tune, And speak of an ancient tale. Life has passed, yet this tune has not ended; The soul has waned, yet this tale has not ended. My back has bent like a harp, yet still Every night I tune my lute until morning. The lute is out of tune, and time has made The musician's hand shake with old age. How can the melody of this lute be harmonious? How can the tune of this musician be in accordance with the rules? The time has come for me to break this lute well, And throw it into the fire for its sweet fragrance. It is crude to play the lute unpleasantly; It is pleasant to set fire to raw agarwood. Perhaps this raw agarwood will scatter fragrance, And sweeten the sense of reason and faith. It is better to strengthen reason and faith, For this body has set its face toward weakness. Gaps have appeared in the row of my teeth; How can one set teeth on any food? Both the incisors have grown blunt at cutting, And the molars have ceased grinding flour. I must now eat like an infant, Bread chewed by the teeth of others. My stature has bent, and my head remains bowed; I have inclined toward my own origin. My mother is the earth, and I am a suckling babe; The mother's longing is not strange to the children. Soon, having rested from all agitation, I shall fall fast asleep in my mother's embrace. No task can be performed by my two eyes Without doubling them to four with European spectacles. Since pain in my legs became my constant companion, Sitting behind my knees has become my habit. My legs are weak when rising, Unless my forearm becomes a pillar for my body. These defects are the demands of old age; Woe to him who is afflicted with old age! Whatever defect falls upon one's temperament due to old age, It is not within the physician's power to cure.
