English translation

It was beyond the realm of the angels To comprehend this subtle point. Inevitably, at the time of Adam's creation, They spoke out of pride and claim: 'O God, we are those who glorify Thee; Why are we, the bead-reciters, reformers? Thou art raising a form from water and clay, From whom corruption and bloodshed shall arise. While the superior is here at the threshold of acceptance, What is the wisdom in creating the inferior? When there is the rose, of what use are thorns and weeds? Before the phoenix, of what use is a fly?' 'And God taught Adam the names, All of them'—that is, the realities of things. The name of Truth before the possessor of gnosis Is nothing but the realities of the archetypes. He taught him all the names completely; He made him understand the attributes of the Divine Essence. Thereafter, He said to the angels: 'Inform Me of these names.' They all deviated from their pride; They all confessed their shortcoming, saying: 'We have no knowledge beyond what Thou hast taught us; We understand nothing contrary to what Thou hast understood. Our creation is Thy craftsmanship; Our knowledge and insight are Thy mercy. Whatever Thou hast shown us, we know; We cannot add anything to it.' Then, for the second time, this call from God Reached Adam: 'Inform them Of the names that have been manifested through them, Since thou hast news of their secrets.' Adam opened his tongue by the command of Truth, And explained those names one by one. Because, compared to the entirety of things, Man is the whole and the rest are parts. Whatever is in the part is in the whole; The part's hand is short from reaching the whole. The whole is not perfectly present in any part; But all the parts are present in the whole. When the whole becomes knowledgeable of its own essence, All parts become known to it. And if the part also becomes a perceiver of itself, It cannot step beyond its own knowledge. Though knowledge of itself is obtained, It remains ignorant of other parts.
