قال خیرالوری علیه سلام
انما الناس هجع و نیام

فاذا جائهم و ان کرهوا
سکرة الموت بعدها انتبهوا

آدمیزاده در مبادی حال
پی نفس و هوا رود همه سال

غیر تن پروری ندارد خوی
سوی دانشوری نیارد روی

خواب غفلت گرفته چشم دلش
نگذشته نظر ز آب و گلش

پی نبرده ز فرط نادانی
جز به لذات جسم و جسمانی

لذت او در آن بود محصور
همت او بر آن بود مقصور

غرض او بود ز جنبش و کسب
اکتساب مراد نفس فحسب

حرکاتش همه هوا و هوس
نزد بی هوای نفس نفس

سکناتش برای نفس تمام
خود نگیرد به غیر نفس آرام

عقل و روح قوا و ارکان را
جمله اقطاع کرده شیطان را

گشته هر یک به شغل دیگر بند
که نیارد گسست ازان پیوند

هر چه با او همی کند شیطان
نیست از وی مخالفت امکان

در کفش مانده سخت مضطر و خوار
همچو آن زن به دست آن عیار

English translation

The Best of Creation, peace be upon him, said: 'Indeed, people are sleeping and slumbering. When there comes to them, even if they dislike it, the stupor of death, they awaken after it.' In the initial stages of his life, man follows his carnal self and desire all year round. He has no habit other than nurturing his body, and he does not turn his face toward wisdom. The sleep of negligence has seized the eye of his heart; his sight has not transcended his water and clay. Due to extreme ignorance, he has not perceived anything except the pleasures of the physical body. His pleasure is confined to that, and his ambition is limited to it. His purpose in action and acquisition is solely to satisfy the desires of his carnal self. His movements are all whim and passion; he does not breathe a single breath without carnal desire. His moments of rest are entirely for the sake of his self; he finds no peace other than through his self. He has granted his intellect, spirit, faculties, and limbs entirely as a fiefdom to Satan. Each has become bound to a different occupation, unable to break that bond. Whatever Satan does with him, there is no possibility of resistance on his part. He remains helpless and despised in Satan's hands, like a woman in the grasp of a rogue.
