صرصر مرگ را ببین چه فن است
سر شکن بیخ کن ثمر فکن است

شاخ پیوندها شکسته اوست
بیخ امیدها گسسته اوست

وی فکنده ست ازین درخت بلند
میوه نارسیده فرزند

چند کردن به حول و قوت فخر
کثمود الذین جابوا الصخر

رو به قرآن بخوان که باد چه کرد
یا جنود ثمود و عاد چه کرد

دست بگسل ز نقل و باده و جام
یاد کن زان که ریزدت در کام

ساقی مرگ جام تلخ مذاق
حین یلتف ساقکم بالساق

پیش از آن دم که بر سر بستر
پیچدت پایها به یکدیگر

پای ازین تنگنای بیرون نه
رخت ازین تیره جای بیرون نه

آن بود پا برون نهادن تو
رخت از اینجا برون نهادن تو

که ببری ز غیر حق پیوند
نهی از بندگیش بر خود بند

الم مرگ قطع پیوند است
زانچه اکنون دلت به آن بند است

بندها را چو بگسلی امروز
به همین قطع و اصلی امروز

چون بمیری ز خویش پیش از مرگ
نخوری زخم نیش بیش از مرگ

English translation

See what skill the cold gale of death possesses: It breaks heads, uproots roots, and casts down fruits. It is the breaker of the branches of relationships; It is the severer of the roots of hopes. Alas, from this tall tree, it has cast down The unripe fruit of a child. How long will you boast of power and strength? Like Thamud, who carved out the rocks. Go, read the Quran to see what the wind did, Or what it did to the armies of Thamud and Ad. Sever your hand from sweets, wine, and the cup; Remember that which will be poured into your throat: The Cupbearer of Death, a bitter-tasting cup, At the moment when leg is entwined with leg. Before that moment when, upon the bed, Your feet twist and entwine with one another, Step out of this narrow strait; Pack your belongings out of this dark place. That stepping out of yours, And packing your belongings out of here, Is to sever your ties from other than Truth, And to place the bond of His servitude upon yourself. The pain of death is the severing of ties From that to which your heart is currently bound. If you sever these bonds today, You will reach union through this very severing today. When you die to yourself before death, You will not suffer the wound of the sting after death.
