English translation

Whoever has a fellow-traveler through the grace of pre-eternity, his luminous heart is both full and empty. Full of what? Of the attraction of the elders of the path. Empty of what? Of clinging to wealth and rank. Happy is the head that set its foot toward the elders, and laid its palm within the palm of the guiding helpers. It took little of the image of the admirers of forms; it received a heart made simple by the image-binders. It became emptied of the image of form-worship, through the illumination of the light of Ubaydullahi. I did not lend to my speech the color of titles, for this name holds titles in disgrace. From this name the heart has a way to a secret, from which the reciting of titles falls short. By that it becomes effaced into tracelessness, and from this tablet the pen becomes one of meanings. Wherever tracelessness raises its banner, how can the marked one set foot there? O you by whom all traces have been effaced, by whom hearts and souls are filled with light, If with my eye I do not gaze by your light, then when I close my sight I am in your presence. Like the sun grant me a light from afar; grant me, from my utmost absence, a presence. Your hand of disposal is far-reaching; do not withhold your hand from the head of the absent. My hand of aspiration clings to your saddle-strap; even if my head reach the heavens, it is your dust. Bind me like a prey to your saddle-strap, and from that turning ring make my head exalted. Because of your collar I will bow my head to no one; in this world this collar-wearing of yours is enough for me. Since your longing became the collar of my neck, behold my longing, O I who am the dog of your collar. O you whose door is the qibla of lovers, do not burn the yearning captives with deprivation. Send me an adornment from the register of poverty; send a letter of secrets from the tablet of annihilation, That from that letter I may make a lively market, and from my lips pour out the jewel of the secret. In thanking you I become a sugar-breaking bird, casting jewels into every listening ear. A sapling has risen from my water and clay, by which the garden of my nature is adorned. A sapling—no, a newborn child—that I have nurtured with the milk of your saintly love. One night in a dream I saw it in such a way that I wrapped it, like a bud, within a cloak. Hopeful, I brought it before you; with reverence you took its head against your side. With kindness you placed mouth upon its mouth, and poured from your mouth into its mouth. A wondrous drink, pure and heart-pleasing, in sweetness and hue like honey and milk. So full did its palate become of that draught that its jeweled cup overflowed. From you I hold this hope, O sea of bounty, that though I came late, swiftly, swiftly You will give water to my ruined field, and make true the interpretation of my dream; You will set an aspiration upon my condition, and give worth to my little shell-fragment; You will draw my droplet up to pearl-hood, from childhood to manhood and manliness, That it may follow the trail of the wayfarers, and with manliness travel the path of true men. So long as, in goodness and auspiciousness, the candle of the sun has life, May the candle of the enlightened-hearted live through you; may your light be radiant upon the horizons.
