English translation

O life of the heart of every living heart, Giver of honor wherever there is embarrassment. Giver of flavor to those who speak sweetly, Sweetener of the works of sweet-workers. Raiser of the turquoise dome, Embellisher of the gold-embroidered rust-colored arch. Bestower of crowns upon the heads of the golden-crowned, Binder of the belt of the needy. Forgiver of sins, Compassionate, Opener of the door to everyone. Cloud that quenches the thirst of parched lips, Table of contentment for those who seek sustenance. Measure of the treasure of the soul in the ruin of the body, Guardian of the treasure with a hundred kinds of talismans. Slow to turn away from those devoted to Thee, Quick to reunite with those who sever their hearts from themselves. Placer of the lock of wisdom on the treasure of the heart, Cleanser of the rust of darkness from the mirror of the heart. Salve for the burns of those with scorched livers, Joy of the soul for those who accumulate sorrow. Unlocker of the treasure of the mine from the waist of the mountain, Displayer of the morning of joy from the night of sorrow. Companion in the solitude of those who are lonely, Qiblah of unity for those who are unique. Shooter of rain-arrows from the rainbow, Giver of wine from the morning breeze and chalice from the tulip. Veil of chastity for those clothed in roses, Robe of mercy for those in bloody shrouds. The beehive gets its stream of honey from Thee, The date seed gets its sweet selling from Thee. The mouth of the garden's bud is full of laughter because of Thee, The tulip's chest in the meadow is branded because of Thee. We are the tight-hearted buds of Thy garden, Burned like tulips from Thy brand. Whoever has Thy brand upon their heart, Shall have freedom from all that is other than Thee. Whatever is other than Thee is Thy creation, Though it is Thy foster-child, it is Thy veil. How long wilt Thou place a veil over Thy countenance? Lift the veil, for Thou art better without a veil! Send back these newly written lines of the ancient index To the place of the steps, as written. Bring back the newly arrived caravan of the stragglers To the ancient footstep. Shout out to the chain of the universe, And break the order of this chain. Shake the leg of the Divine Throne from its place, And cast down the foundation of the Chair. Make the root-pulling, branch-breaking wind Prevail over the tree of the Lote-tree garden. Throw a stone at the colored vessel of the heavens, And make a breach in its vessel of trickery. Its color is darkness and narrowness, Its colorlessness is better than its colorfulness. The pain and comfort that follow each other thus, Are the effects of its dyeing. The color of all is from this dyeing, Hand turned indigo from biting one's fingers. Throw down the sun and moon from the roof, So they may be disgraced. Do not tear the veil of the veil-dwellers, And pass over the tearing of the veil. Untie the bound belt of Gemini, And open the pearl-constellation of the Pleiades. Strike Venus's harp of joy to the ground, How long shall she sit in the celestial banquet? Pull the pen of Mercury from its fingers, Nay, empty its fist of fingers. The four walls of the elements that have risen To the moon from this stage of transit, Disassemble them piece by piece, And lead them into the thread of non-existence. Set water against fire, So it may become aware of it and raise smoke. From the fire of wrath, take away the wetness of water, Make its sea and land a mirage of non-existence. Pour black dust upon the head of the wind, Drown the earth in the moisture of the deluge. Destine earthquakes for the earth, And make it 'high turned low'. The Fish and the Bull that bear its weight, Are, with all their burden, keepers of Thy load. Slaughter the Bull with the dagger of fear, And saw the back of the Fish in half. In short, whatever shows color, Erase it all from the mirror of existence, So that with an eagerness greater than all, I may behold Thy face beyond all. Thou art pure light, and the world is a shadow, The shadow is a neighbor to the light. Respect my right of neighborhood, Do not cast me down like a shadow, despised on the way. For the meaning of a good end, Break the cup of form, O Jami! Perhaps he may become distant from the shadow-dwellers, And the darkness of his shadowiness may become light. May he turn his face from color to colorlessness, And find the scent from the garden of colorlessness.
