کیست درعالم ز عاشق زارتر
نیست کار از کار او دشوارتر

نی غم یار از دلش زایل شود
نی تمنای دلش حاصل شود

مایه آزار او بیگاه و گاه
طعنه بدخواه و پند نیکخواه

چون سلامان آن نصیحت ها شنید
جامه آسودگی بر خود درید

خاطرش از زندگانی تنگ شد
سوی نابود خودش آهنگ شد

چون حیات مردنی در خور بود
مردگی از زندگی خوشتر بود

روی با ابسال در صحرا نهاد
در فضای جانفشانی پا نهاد

پشته پشته هیمه از هر جا برید
جمله را یکجا فراهم آورید

جمع شد زان پشته ها کوهی بلند
آتشی در پشته و کوه او فکند

هر دو از دیدار آتش خوش شدند
دست هم بگرفته در آتش شدند

شه نهانی واقف آن حال بود
همتش بر کشتن ابسال بود

بر مراد خویشتن همت گماشت
سوخت او را و سلامان را گذاشت

بود آن غش بر زر و این زر خوش
زر خوش خالص بماند و سوخت غش

چون زر مغشوش در آتش فتد
گر شکستی اوفتد بر غش فتد

کار مردان دارد از یزدان نصیب
نیست این از همت مردان غریب

پیش صاحب همت این ظاهر بود
هر که بی همت بود منکر بود

English translation

Who in the world is more miserable than a lover? There is no task more difficult than his. Neither does the sorrow of the beloved depart from his heart, Nor is the desire of his heart ever attained. The source of his constant torment, day and night, Is the mockery of the ill-wisher and the advice of the well-wisher. When Salaman heard those advices, He rent the garment of comfort upon himself. His mind grew weary of living, And he set his course toward his own non-existence. When life is only worthy of death, Dying is sweeter than living. He set his face toward the desert with Absal, And stepped into the arena of self-sacrifice. He cut firewood, bundle by bundle, from every place, And gathered them all together in one spot. A high mountain arose from those bundles, And he cast fire into the stack and the mountain. Both were delighted at the sight of the fire; Taking each other's hand, they stepped into the flames. The king was secretly aware of this state; His focus and spiritual resolve were bent on killing Absal. He exerted his resolve toward his desire; He burned her, but spared Salaman. She was the alloy on the gold, and he was pure gold; The pure gold remained safe and pure, while the alloy burned. When impure gold falls into the fire, If any damage or break occurs, it falls on the alloy. The deeds of spiritual men receive a portion from God; This is not strange to the resolve of great men. To the possessor of spiritual resolve, this is clear; Whoever lacks resolve will deny it.
