شمس تبریز دید کاوحد دین
کرده نظاره بتان آیین

در دمشق از هوای غمزه زنان
گرد هنگامه هاست طوف کنان

سر بدو برده آشکار و نهفت
گفت ای شیخ در چه کاری گفت

چشمه آفتاب می بینم
لیک در طشت آب می بینم

گفت هیهات این چه بی بصریست
راست بین باش این چه کج نظریست

بر قفا گر نه دمل است تو را
کار بهر چه مهمل است تو را

سر ز پستی به سوی بالا کن
سوی خورشید چشم خود وا کن

ذات خورشید بر فلک طالع
تو به عکسی چرا شدی قانع

English translation

Shams of Tabriz saw that Awhad al-Din Had made it his custom to gaze at beautiful forms. In Damascus, driven by the desire for the glances of coquettish ones, He was circling around the public gatherings. Shams approached him, both openly and in secret, And said, 'O Sheikh, what are you doing?' He replied, 'I am beholding the fountain of the sun, But I am seeing it in a basin of water.' Shams said, 'Alas! What sightlessness is this! Be right-seeing! What crooked vision is this? If you do not have a boil on the back of your neck, Why is your task so neglected? Raise your head from the depths toward the heights, Open your eyes toward the sun. The essence of the sun is rising in the sky, Why have you become content with a mere reflection?'
