Section 1 - The Chapter on the Etiquette of Audition (Bab Adab al-Sama')

Original content

English translation

Know that the condition of the etiquette of audition (sama') is that you not do it hastily, nor make a habit of it; do it at long intervals, so that its reverence does not depart from the heart. And when you perform sama', an elder (pir) must be present there, and the place empty of the common folk, and the singer (qawwal) reverent, and the heart empty of preoccupations, and the temperament averse to frivolity, and affectation set aside. And until the power of sama' appears, it is not proper that you exaggerate in it. When it has taken hold, it is not proper that you repel it from yourself; be a follower of the moment (waqt) in what it requires. If it moves you, move; and if it holds you still, be still; and know how to distinguish between the power of temperament and the burning of ecstasy (wajd). The listener must have such insight that he can receive the incoming reality from God (warid-i haqq) and can render it its due; and when its sovereignty appears upon the heart, he should not repel it from himself by affectation, and when it has taken hold and then lessens, he should not draw it back by affectation. And in the state of movement he must not expect assistance from anyone, but if someone offers assistance he should not forbid it; and in the sama' he should not intrude upon anyone, nor disturb the moment, nor meddle in another's state, nor judge him according to his own intention, for in that there is much lack of blessing. And he must: if the singer sings well, not say 'you sing well', and if he sings badly and out of measure and drives the temperament outward, not say 'sing better', and not quarrel with him in his heart, nor regard him in the midst; he should refer it to God and hear rightly. And if a group has been seized by sama' and he has no share of it, so that in his own soberness he looks upon their intoxication, he must be yearning toward the moment and submit to the sovereign of the moment, so that its blessings may reach him. And I, who am Ali ibn Uthman al-Jullabi, prefer that beginners not be admitted to sama' gatherings, so that their temperament not be disturbed; for in it there are great dangers, and its gravest calamity is that women look upon the dervishes from a rooftop or some place during their sama', and from this severe veils fall upon the listeners, or one of the youths is among them; especially since the ignorant among the Sufis have made all this into a doctrine and have removed the truth of its meaning from the midst. And I seek forgiveness for what of the kinds of calamity and the making light of the practice has passed upon me, and I seek help from the Lord, blessed and exalted, that He purify my outer and inner from calamities; and I counsel you and the readers of this book to observe the rulings of this book. And with God is help and success, and joining and separating, and God suffices us and is the best companion. And may God bless Muhammad and all his family and grant them abundant peace.
