زد حکیمی به طرف باغ قدم
دید زاغ و کبوتری با هم

هر دو فارغ نشسته بر یک شاخ
در زبان آوری به هم گستاخ

مانده حیران به فهم خرده شناس
کین نه بر وفق حکمت است و قیاس

صحبت جنس جز به جنس که دید
الفت بی مناسبت که شنید

ناگه از شاخ آمدند فرو
به تمنای آب بر لب جو

بر سر خاک در شتاب شدند
لنگ لنگان به سوی آب شدند

دید از آنجا که تیز فرهنگیست
که میانشان مناسبت لنگیست

لنگی پا رساند بر همشان
در تکاپوی ساخت همدمشان

که تو را شوق آن شود جامی
که رهی همچو میوه از خامی

شیوه نارسیدگان بگذار
رسم و راه رسیدگان بردار

تا ز خامی خویش و هیچ کسی
به مقام رسیدگی برسی

سوی پاکان توجهی می کن
به تکلف تشبهی می کن

English translation

A wise man took a walk in a garden, He saw a crow and a pigeon together. Both were sitting free of worry on a single branch, Speaking boldly to each other. The discerning wise man stood amazed, Thinking: 'This is contrary to wisdom and reason.' 'Who has ever seen association of different species?' 'Who has ever heard of affection without a common ground?' Suddenly, they flew down from the branch, Desiring water at the bank of a stream. They hurried upon the ground, Going limping towards the water. Since he was of sharp intellect, he observed That their common ground was their lameness! The lameness of their feet had brought them together, Making them companions in their struggle. O Jami, may you have the desire To escape, like a fruit, from being raw. Leave the ways of the immature behind, Adopt the customs and path of the mature, So that from your own rawness and that of anyone else, You may reach the stage of maturity. Direct your attention toward the pure, And, even if with effort, try to resemble them.
