English translation

O you whose collar, like a rose, is in the hands of the base, Withdraw the skirt of companionship from the unworthy. Though in the beginning they give you opening, In the end, they will cast you to the wind. Like a bud, close your lips from companions, Do not laugh foolishly, like a rose, in everyone's face. Do not display your lights like the sun, Be like a shadow behind your own wall. Against worthy and unworthy, at the sanctuary of obscurity, Lock the doors of exit and entry. Be a dweller of monasteries like those with the breath of Jesus, Empty the house of strangers. Even if your place is in the depths of a cave, And the coil of a snake has become your leg-chain, It is better than putting your foot in every circle, And making the gathering of every base person your place. And even if a mountain of stone becomes your waist-belt, And the tail of a leopard becomes the sash around your middle, It is better than two-faced, hypocritical people Girding their loins in service before you. Even if the claw of a lion combs your head, And its struggle makes you weary of your life, It is better than companions placing the hand of comfort on you, Or applying the ointment of kindness to your wound. Even if the turbulent sea drowns you, Or the wave of destruction passes over your head, It is better than bringing your belongings onto the ship of close companions In the hope of salvation. Sit less in the shelter of the sun's rays, Lest your shadow become your companion. Turn away from strolling along the riverbank, Lest your image reflect back from the water. Do not place the mirror before your eyes, Lest it give display to your reflection. At the beginning of creation when you came into existence, You came unique and solitary, separate from all. At the end of the matter when you depart from here, Without doubt, you will go alone, away from all. What is all this knotting and binding now? And what is all this mixing and bonding? Sever ties with these people, for they are your loss, They are the adversaries of your heart and the enemies of your soul. They diminish your worth so that they may increase, They weigh your faults so that they may appear balanced. If you become cotton, they are all fire, And if you bow your head, they will all draw themselves up in arrogance. When your heart becomes distressed with grief, It becomes the source of their composure. And if the means of your presence are gathered, The vein of their envy will flare up like a candle. How long in this narrow impasse without any opening Will you throw your life to the wind from their breath? Their cold breath is the autumn wind, Coldness of soul is their souvenir. I fear that day when they make you cold, And make your heart a shield for the arrow of pain. Anyone whose path is not the preoccupation of religion, Is a ghoul of your way, God knows! Do not set the foot of loyalty in the tracks of ghouls, Turn your face toward the wilderness of loneliness. And if, from your passionate heart, You do not have the endurance for the wilderness of loneliness, Arise and step onto the path of the departed ones, Turn your face toward the resting place of the departed. Remember their forgotten era, Hear the subtle lessons from their silent lips. See them filled with the dust of bones, Make the collyrium of insight from that makeup box. See their dwelling place beneath the narrow stone, And crush the head of the serpent of negligence against the stone. With a constricted breath, bring forth from within The whisper of 'We shall surely join you.' Perhaps your heart will find life from that, And the day of your life will find radiance.
