Original content

English translation

O you of dark heart, bent in double from attributes, Yet boasting of the attributes of the people of purity. Your heart has not become clean of seeking fame, Yet you have made a name for yourself in Sufism. What is the way of the Sufi? Non-existence (nothingness). How long will you stand on your own existence? Get lost from this existence full of turmoil, Nay, get lost even from your state of being lost. Without becoming empty of yourself like a reed, How long will you blow (boast), since you are nothing? If you are nothing, what is all this noise? What is this fresh whispering at every breath? What is the reed but that which by its own artistry, Breathes of nothing but its own reedbed? It traverses the desert of its own existence, And finds its way to the reedbed of non-existence. When it scatters sugar from the reedbed, It becomes a sugar-land for the companions. When it draws a breath from the sugar-land, The parrot of souls becomes a fly there. On your lips is this boast, 'I am like a reed,' But in your heart is the thought, 'Who am I but myself?' Your body is Roman and your heart is Zanzibari, Go, for this is not the way of single-coloredness (sincerity). With a Roman body and a Zanzibari heart, what is the point? Adopt one color; what is the point of being double-colored? Leave the color of double-coloredness to the double-colored, Because double-coloredness is all fault and shame. It is better that you seek healing from the Messiah, In the hope that you might be freed from this defect. Your belly is dry from fasting like a drum, And your patched cloak has become a flag on your shoulder. The fairness of poverty has not emerged from your heart; How long will you boast of poverty with this drum and flag? The hundred-shredded dervish cloak you have on your shoulder Is a cover-up over a hundred faults. When the warp of the cloak of piety is weak, How can it be set right by a torn dervish cloak? The string of your prayer-beads is a trap of leadership, Its beads are the seeds for the birds of the air. You spread the seed and the trap for the purpose Of eating nourishment from a hungry bird. What is your tooth-brush but your file? Your teeth are sharp at everyone's table. Grind the sharpness of your teeth with a file, Do not swallow morsels from every table. When your comb describes your virtues, Your tale sets its head towards vices. There is not a single black hair left on your face, How long will you make your book of deeds black with sins? Explain your posture which is straight like a bow, For your bow, a walking stick has become the string. Since heaven strung this bow of yours, The arrow of your youth flew out from your thumb. It is the turn of old age, do not act like youth, Do not lean toward the Nile of desires. When you place your foot upon the prayer-carpet, Your foot does not touch the ground out of pride. Rub your face on the ground at the time of prayer, For the prayer-carpet is the veil of need. Beware of crookedness and waywardness, Adopt the path of the straight-goers. O pretender, do not wear the cloak of piety! O pious one, do not drink the cup of desire! Wine-stained asceticism is worth nothing; Copper gilded with gold is worth nothing. Keep your form and meaning aligned, So that the people of purity may seek you. Either pull the cloak of piety off your head, Or pull your foot away from the path of desire!
