English translation

O you who, because of the drum of the belly, are like a reed-pipe, All throat from head to foot! Your business, whatever you may imagine, Is nothing but to fill your belly. Your greed did not take the morsel with fairness; The nurse cut your umbilical cord for the sake of the belly. How long will you suffer the belly's pain in vain, Even if the nurse did cut your cord in this manner? Make your belly dry like a musk-pod, So that perhaps the scent of musk may blow from your breath. The breath of fasting from the faster's lips Is better than the musk-pod of the Tatar musk-deer. A stomach prepared for bread and water, How can it benefit from the soul's nourishment? When your inner self is full of passion and desire, How can the pleasure of 'Fasting is for Me' reach you? Whatever tidings the Divine Law (Shari'ah) gives, The greatest word is 'and I am its reward.' When the flame of Hell strikes like a sword, Or its sparks cast the arrows of abandonment, The fasting recorded in your ledger Will draw over you like a shield of light. Greed and gluttony are a fire-filled Hell; It is pleasant to seal the door of Hell. Fasting is the seal placed upon its door; Apply the seal so that you may escape its evil. Like a scavenger's donkey, out of sheer wretchedness, You have grown accustomed to carrying filth. Why are you harsh with me over this point? You carry it in your belly, and he carries it on his back. See the new moon of fasting on the horizon, Which is like the eyebrow of a houri from a dark blue veil, Signaling that, for our sake, Seal your lips, O you whose lip's beauty is our seal. When you close your lips to food and drink, A gate of opening is unlocked in the sanctuary. What a wondrous key that in this narrow world, Locks the abyss of Hell and opens Paradise! Your year has three hundred and sixty days; Do not complain of eating little for thirty of them. If even one of these thirty is broken by you, Your throat falls into the trap of sixty days of expiation. If neglect has plundered your debt [of fasting], Your turning from performance leads to expiation. Hunger is the food from the table of Divine Pleasure; Thirst is the drink from the cup of purity. The fasting of the elect is not just this and nothing more; Rather, it is cutting oneself off from every desire. Whatever you should not seek, do not seek; Whatever you should not say, do not say. Do not open your eyes to what should not be seen; Clear your ears of what should not be heard. Do not defile your hands with deceitful work; Do not weary your feet on the path of false hope. Purify both knowledge and action from hypocrisy; Nay, purify the heart of all besides God. You have no qibla of religion other than God; Know nothing and see nothing but God. Every breath that is not His remembrance, stop it; And whatever is not pleasing to Him, value it less. All else besides Him is the portion of the self; Woe to you if you do not withdraw your hand from it. Seeking that portion is out of lack of substance; The substance of your good fortune is having no such portion. If passion and desire possessed any nobility, How would the people of heart have left them to you? In their heart and soul they sowed another seed; Consequently, they left this one to you.
