English translation

O you of Arabian descent, titled the Unlettered Prophet, Servants to you are both non-Arabs and Arabs. The sun is envious, shining from the height of grace, Your sunset is Yathrib and your sunrise is Hejaz. Around your head are those of Abtah and Yathrib, The dust of your threshold is of the East and the West. Strike with the sword of Arabia, for eloquence is yours, Capture the non-Arabs, for beauty and grace are yours. If you did not rub civet with a pen, Or were not famous for your handwriting, Let your morning have no lamp-smoke, Let your garden have no crow's footprint. Since they read and write about you, What sorrow is it if you do not read or write? From you, the black has hope for whiteness, It is better that you do not put black upon white. Your reading is sufficient in that you have spoken, And have summoned the flowing souls to God. The ear of the world, when you called upon God, Became a casket of pearls from your speech. If an imitation pearl remains far from this casket, Or if a spark of light is not given from this tower, Still, no accusation is deserved by this casket, Nor does any darkness reach this tower. When the ruby of your lip scatters sugar, It turns the realm of the soul into a sugar plantation. The parrot of my nature, which sings your praises, Is in desire of a single scattering of your sugar. Sin has scattered the thorns of cruelty in my path, Open your lips and ask forgiveness for my sins. So that I may renew my praise-singing, O sugar plantation, scatter some sugar! So that this burden may fall from my neck, And the scent of liberation may reach me from myself. Delivered from self, I will kiss your dust, And set my face toward your pure shrine. With an eloquent mind and a silent tongue, I will raise a cry from a boiling heart. I will say to you: O Master, behold my poverty, See my helplessness, my downfall, and my old age. My Alif has become a Lam from deep sorrows, Hear these one or two words of my condition. I have come with all my defilement, Waiting for forgiveness and grace. I have drawn a circle with the finger of my hand, So that the wheel of heaven does not defeat me. May that circle become my fortress of safety, From the dangers of the heavens and the errors of time. May I sit safe from all calamities, Established like Jami at your threshold.
