English translation

He, the Exalted, said: 'Establish prayer and give alms (2:43/al-Baqarah).' And he, peace be upon him, said: 'Prayer and what your right hands possess.'

Prayer, in terms of language, means remembrance and submission, and in the discourse of the jurists it has a specific expression for these customary rulings. It is a command from God the Exalted: perform five prayers at five times. Before entering into it there are conditions: one is purity — outwardly from filth and inwardly from lust; another is purity of the garment — outwardly from impurity and inwardly that it be from a lawful source; third is purity of the place — outwardly from mishaps and harm and inwardly from corruption and disobedience; fourth is facing the qibla — the outward qibla being the Kaaba and its inward being the Throne and beyond that the secret of contemplation; fifth is standing — outward standing in the state of ability and inward standing in the garden of proximity, on the condition of the entering of its time in the outward Law and the permanence of the time in the degree of Reality; sixth is sincerity of intention through turning toward the Presence; seventh is a takbir in the station of awe, a standing in the place of union, a recitation with measured order and majesty, a bowing (ruku) with humility, a prostration (sujud) with self-abasement, a tashahhud with gathering, and a salutation (salam) with the annihilation of attribute; as the Prophet, peace be upon him, was described: 'The Prophet, God bless him, used to pray while within him there was a sound like the boiling of a cauldron.' When the Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed, there was a boiling in his heart like the boiling of a brazen vessel beneath which a fire is kindled.

And when the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (may God ennoble his face), set about prayer, the hairs of his head would stand out from his garment and trembling would fall upon him, and he would say: 'The time has come to discharge a trust which the heavens and the earth were too weak to bear.'

And one of the shaykhs says: I asked Hatim al-Asamm (God's mercy upon them): 'How do you perform prayer?' He said: 'When the time comes, I make an ablution both outward and inward — outward with water and inward with repentance. Then I enter the mosque, and I make the Sacred Mosque a witness, and I set the Station of Abraham between my two eyebrows, and I regard Paradise on my right and Hell on my left and the Sirat beneath my feet, and the Angel of Death behind my back. Then I make a takbir with reverence, and a standing with respect, and a recitation with awe, and a bowing with humility, and a prostration with entreaty, and a sitting with forbearance and dignity, and a salutation with gratitude.' And with God is help.
