English translation

O you who have found a scent from the rose-garden of speech, and have turned your face from observing the meadow! The heartsick nightingale, longing for the meadow, has become a reader of subtle points from the leaves of the jasmine. Having wisely folded the jasmine leaves, he has turned his face toward the pages of speech. Every page that is inscribed with speech there, is a prescription for the healing of grief and pain. Fix your eye on the book of spiritual concentration, and give health to the pain of separation. Be a companion to the book of poems, for indeed, it is the best companion and intimate. The book of poetry is the garden of the soul, the opener of the buds of spiritual victories. Every leaf that you turn of it, another flower will bloom, if you but know. If you wish for it to become the splendor of your garden, and its fragrance to become the perfume of your mind, empty your mind of the taint of self-interest, and make high your aspiration with sincerity of pursuit. Wipe away the rust of prejudice from within, and open the path of contemplation to the intellect. Do not pass by rapidly like a pen dripping drops, but like a compass, keep your foot firmly in place. Resolve to gather the inner meaning, and revolve around every point and every subtlety. Seek the truth of meaning from every letter, and delve deeply into the narrow straits of profound meaning. Without diving into the sea, the diver does not capture the shell of the special pearl. If you approve of some of its meanings, be content with even one out of ten. Though the sea is a mine of pearls, its shells are more numerous than its pearls. The essence is the meaning; do not impose a penalty if a defect should fall in the phrasing. Although the pistachio is good when closed, the kernel inside is better than the shell on the outside. If there is a fault, practice generosity and conceal it, or else do not cry out in vain like an envious person. Concealing faults is important for friends; 'Your love for a thing makes you blind and deaf.' You made fault-finding your art, and multiplied a single unseen fault into a hundred. Sometimes you draw an extravagant line over what is straight, sometimes you criticize the meter for minor variations (zihaf). Sometimes you complain that the rhyme is defective, sometimes that the word is unacceptable. Sometimes, without having grasped the meaning, you find fault with it out of prejudice. Since you are far from the order of meanings, you are excused in whatever you do of this sort. You have never let blood drip from your heart for the sake of making a discordant thing harmonious. Your bird did not become attuned to rhyme, and your mind did not become constricted like a tight rhyme. You did not sit behind your knee [in contemplation] for a single night, nor did you close your eyes to sleep for a single night, to draw a pearl from the treasury of the unseen, you did not draw the head of thought into your cloak. In order for a subtle meaning to show its face to you, you did not curl like a hair from the fire of the heart. You will never know the pain of this work, and you will never be able to understand it either. It is better that we do not bow down because of your deviance, and even if you utter two hundred taunts, we remain silent.
