English translation

O you in this mind-robbing workshop, Keep your eyes open and ears alert day and night!

Yet there is no trace of seeing in your eyes, And no news of hearing in your ears.

You are like the narcissus of this meadow, which from the stream's edge Has beautifully cast its gaze in every direction,

But sees nothing of the rose's cheek, Nor has any trade with the cypress and jasmine.

You are the rose of this garden which, from the tip of the branch, At dawn has opened its ears wide,

Yet hears no song from the nightingale, Nor any hidden secret from the bud's lip.

You neither listen nor see all this; How long will you sit like this, blind and deaf?

For a while, take the path of the aware, And abandon the company of those who have lost their way.

Draw back the veil from your world-beholding eye; Look ahead, behind, below, and above!

See what this revolving sphere is, And what its eternal revolution around you is.

Who raised the jeweled canopy over your head? Who painted this variegated design upon it?

Who made the sun the light-giver of the day? Who made the moon the night-illuminating candle?

Who is the scale-giver of the shop of the heavens, Making its pans out of the moon and the sun,

So that when they adorn the shop with the scales, They measure out life for the people of the world?

Who is it that, with the hand of a fiery heart, Tore open the dawn like dark-blue satin,

Acquired needle and thread from the sun, And sewed a yellow patch of fine linen upon it?

Who is it that, bent like an arch from the vault of heaven, Struck the four elements together beneath it?

When the elements were blended together, Form after form was newly created.

He made the gathering of the universe complete, Making Adam the seal of all forms.

For this bloodthirsty workshop, There is no choice but to have a director.

The contingent essence, by the proofs of intellect, Cannot bring itself into existence.

Since there is no trace of its own independent existence, How can another reach existence through it?

An essence that has not received existence from the Bestower of Being, How can it be a bestower of being?

A dry cloud that is empty of water— The quality of giving water cannot come from it.

Whatever has any sign of existence, If it is confined within the realm of contingency,

It would necessarily follow that no existing thing Would ever come into being in this arena of existence.

Who has seen a painting without the painter's brush? Who has heard a melody without the musician's plectrum?

Since the contingent alone cannot perform the task, Of necessity, there arose a need for the Necessary Being.

He exists by Himself, and the world exists through Him; Consider non-existent anything that is not connected to Him.

Movement reaches this chain from Him, And the face of this caravan is turned toward Him.

When the movement of an ant pricks your back, You quickly bring your finger toward that ant.

From that prick you know its existence, And with your fingertip you drive it from your back.

You would not believe that within your tattered clothes Your back was pricked by anything other than that mover.

The world and all these signs within it, The heavens and this immense movement within them—

If they continually play the screen and the melody, It is because behind the curtain there is a melody-maker.

Both movement and rest for all are from Him; For all, the seed is from Him and the snare is from Him.

It is through Him that the tree moves, not the wind; It is through Him that fortune is auspicious, not the celestial sphere.

He quenches the thirst of the thirsty, not the water; He grants joy to the intoxicated, not the wine.

The bud does not bloom in the garden without Him, The fruit does not set on the branch without Him.

He is the worker, and others are but the tools of the work; Once you have found the worker, leave the tools aside!

The work is His, He is the worker, and the world is His tool; He is the kernel, and all others are like the shell.

If you desire the kernel, close your eyes to the shell; The seeker of the kernel does not approve of the shell.

Erase the letters of others from the tablet of the heart, And do not scratch your mind with the fingernail of thought.

Make your mirror simple and clear of everything, And wash your chest clean of all else,

So that your chest may become the treasure of eternal life, And your mirror drowned in the light of pre-eternity.

The valley of proof and analogy will be crossed, And you will remain, along with a heart that recognizes the Friend.

Where the Friend is showing His glory, The argument of the intellect is only a cause of division.

When this fortune turns its face to you, Turn toward it and say nothing to anyone.

For the purse of logical reasoning, If empty of the gem of gnosis, is better empty.
