English translation

A gnostic, a guide on the path of Truth, became the guest of a wise man. The host stood up to serve him, and adorned the guest-house with a feast. Following the custom of the generous, he prepared the table and the house with various kinds of food. The courtyard of the house became crowded with platters, all filled with colorful fruits. The gnostic was hesitant, and was eating only a little bit. He reached out his hand and drew it back, taking but little and eating but little. Whoever is a diner at the table of Truth, eating food is a burden on their heart. He receives nourishment from the spiritual food of 'I pass the night...', and thus refuses morsels and delicacies. The host realized the guest's state, and took the path of honor and respect. He said, 'O Sheikh, as the alms of your teeth, do not reject the offering of the needy. Do not spurn our table with your foot; break a loaf of bread with your own hand. Since you have sat at the table of nobodies, let your lips and teeth touch their bread. And if you have no need for the table and spread, stretch out your hand toward the fruit. All these fruits, food, and drink, of every kind in this world, Truth has created for you, so that each one may suit your appetite.' The gnostic said, 'Indeed, whatever exists, He has created for us; but Our creation is not for the sake of these things, nor is our existence to be sacrificed for them. Since Truth has created both good and evil, He has created us for Himself. You must have read: 'And I did not create the jinn...' and must be sincerely convinced of its truth. The 'lam' of causality was given to 'worship' (ya'budun); He certainly did not mention 'eating' (ya'kulun). Whoever saw the face of the Benefactor within the blessings, did not approve of paying attention to the blessings themselves. The Benefactor made him a banner of His intimacy, and intimacy with Him replaced his blessings. He constantly received power and sustenance from the Truth, and became independent of drink and food.
