بحر بس ژرف و یم بس طامی
قطب حق بایزید بسطامی

بود روزی به بادیه گذران
دید فرسوده کله ای و بر آن

آیتی ثبت بود کش معنی
بود خسران دنیی و عقبی

چون بر آن سر نوشته را نگریست
بوسه ها زد بر آن و زار گریست

کین سر صوفیی ست افتاده
دو جهان را برای حق داده

برگزیده زیان هر دو سرای
تا بود سودش از میانه خدای

ای خوش آن کس که شد پی این سود
به زیانکاری جهان خوشنود

از دو عالم همین خدا طلبید
دو جهان داد و یک خدای خرید

هر چه بودش ز جنس دنیی و دین
باخت در عشق حق خلیل آیین

English translation

A very deep ocean and a swelling sea, The pole of truth, Bayazid Bastami, Was passing through the desert one day; He saw a worn-out skull on the way. An inscription was recorded upon its brow, Whose meaning was loss in this world and the hereafter. When he looked at the writing on that head, He kissed it repeatedly and wept bitterly, Saying: 'This is the head of a fallen Sufi, Who gave up both worlds for the sake of the Truth. He chose the loss of both abodes, So that God alone would be his gain. How blessed is the one who went after this gain, And was well-pleased with the loss of this world. From both worlds, he sought only God; He gave up both worlds and purchased one God. Whatever he possessed of the world and religion, He risked and lost in the love of God, in the manner of Abraham.'
