Section 58 - The Lament of the Second Sage

Original content

English translation

The other said: From the vast world we came, ignorant, to this narrow palace, with a heart plain of the imprint of thoughts, a hand empty of the practice of crafts. Neither in our intellect was the good clearly parted from the ill, nor in our eye was water set apart from fire. When for a while we dwelt here as residents, we fell into the snare of hope and fear. We sat heedless of our own true aim, empty-minded of any thought of our own betterment. We did not cross the desert of heedlessness, we found no way to the original purpose. Within this veil we untied not a single knot, we turned our face from everything to no avail. Strange that, for all this writhing and this turning, our heart took nothing at all from this abyss. On the day we go forth from this abyss, we go with heart and eye brimming with blood from this pain. How shall that one tread the path of good fortune who departs from this hard dwelling in hardship?
