گوش بر مدح مدح گو کم نه
بلکه احث التراب فی وجهه

مدح گوی تو در برابر تو
خاک ادبار ریخت بر سر تو

هر چه بر تو ز نفس شورانگیز
ریخت بردار و بر رخ او ریز

پیش خیر بشر نکو سیری
کرد روزی ستایش دگری

گفت ویحک قطعت عنق اخیک
ساختی روز روشنش تاریک

مدحت یار خویش بگزیدی
گردن یار خویش ببریدی

گرچه کردی بلند مقدارش
کشتی از تیغ عجب و پندارش

جان قدسی که جسم خاک وی است
عجب و پندار وی هلاک وی است

باشد او را در این سپنج سرای
زندگانی و زندگی به خدای

از خدا چون به خود شود محجوب
صدمت مرگ بر وی آرد کوب

ظاهرا گرچه زنده اش خوانی
باطنا مرده است تا دانی

انما الناس کلهم موتی
نیست جز اهل علم مستثنی

لیک علمی که باشدت قائد
که بدان سوی حق شوی عائد

پرده از دیده تو بردارد
جز حقیقت به دیده نگذارد

بردت زین حیات حس امید
زنده ای سازدت به حق جاوید

نایدت پیش چشم ذوق و شهود
غیر حق قدیم و حی ودود

همه را ظل ذات او بینی
جلوه گاه صفات او بینی

چون به ذات و صفات خود نگری
پی به آن ذات و آن صفات بری

گر کسی گویدت ثنا و مدیح
به بیان بدیع و لفظ فصیح

گرچه بر تو ز وی شود واقع
دانی آن را ز حق به حق راجع

نخوت و کبر بر تو ره نزند
آفت عجب گرد تو نتند

ور تو هم لب به نطق بگشایی
که کسی را به مدح بستایی

مدح تو حمد حق بود یکسر
لیک ظاهر به صورت مظهر

نبود باعث تو حرص و طمع
از پی دفع جوع و جذب شبع

بر چنین مادح و چنین ممدوح
کند این مدح فتح باب فتوح

همچو مدح ابوفراس شهیر
به فرزدق بر صغیر و کبیر

بر امامی که عابدین را زین
بود اعنی علی سلیل حسین

English translation

Do not pay heed to the praise of the flatterer, Rather, throw dust in his face. The one who praises you to your face Has poured the dust of misfortune on your head. Whatever your passionate self has poured upon you, Pick it up and throw it in his face. Before the Best of Mankind, a well-mannered man Once praised another. He said, 'Woe to you, you have cut the neck of your brother! You have made his bright day dark.' You chose to praise your friend, But you have severed your friend's neck. Though you elevated his status, You killed him with the sword of vanity and self-conceit. The holy soul, for which the body is but its dust, Is destroyed by vanity and self-conceit. In this transient world, its existence And its life are solely through God. When it becomes veiled from God by focusing on itself, The blow of death will crush it. Though outwardly you may call him alive, Inwardly he is dead, as you should know. 'Indeed, all mankind are dead,' And none are excluded except the people of knowledge. Yet, it must be the knowledge that is your leader, By which you return toward the Divine Truth. It lifts the veil from your eyes, And allows nothing but the Truth to be seen. It takes you beyond this sensory life of hope, And makes you eternally alive through the Divine Truth. Nothing will appear before your eyes of spiritual taste and contemplation Except the Eternal Truth, the Living, the Loving God. You will see everything as the shadow of His Essence, And the manifestation of His Attributes. When you look at your own essence and attributes, You will find the path to that Essence and those Attributes. If someone speaks your praise and eulogy With eloquent expression and fluent words, Even if it is directed at you, You know it returns from God to God. Arrogance and pride will not block your path, And the affliction of vanity will not weave around you. And if you also open your lips to speak, To praise someone in eulogy, Your praise will be entirely the praise of God, Though outwardly in the form of a manifestation. Your motive will not be greed or avarice, To ward off hunger or seek satiety. For such a praiser and such a praised one, This praise opens the gateway of spiritual victories. Like the famous praise of Abu Firas (al-Farazdaq) Before the small and the great, For the Imam who was the Ornament of the Worshippers, Namely, Ali, the descendant of Husayn.
