Original content

English translation

A beautiful son said to his father, 'O you who have knowledge of every good and bad, When I step out of the threshold, A clamor and tumult arises from everywhere. From the right and left, needy souls Begin to proclaim their love. One of them lets out a painful sigh, Tearing the robe of his soul in agony. Another sheds blood from his eyes, Quenching the heart's burning with the tears of his eyes. Each, from the pain of love and the burning of the liver, Speaks in a different tongue. I know not what appearance I should assume, Whom I should associate with, and whom I should avoid.' The father said, 'Ask each of them separately, "How has my beauty led you astray?"' One of them said, 'By that simple, downless cheek, My face has fallen painted with my blood.' Another said, 'By those ruby, wine-colored lips, My eyes are full of moisture and my heart is full of blood.' Another said, 'That newly sprouted peach-fuzz Drew a line of cancellation across my scroll of abstinence.' Another said, 'That stature and gait Have taken away patience and composure from my heart.' Another said, 'That curve of the eyebrow Has bent my back double under the burden of love.' Another said, 'From the dimple of that chin, My sweet soul has come to my lips.' Another said, 'The grain of that beauty mark Has planted the seed of pain and sorrow in my heart.' Another said, 'By those two intoxicated narcissus eyes, My heart was broken like a goblet of wine.' And another said, 'An incomparable, formless meaning I beheld from behind the veil of outward forms. My heart became captivated by that meaning; I give up my life for that meaning. Unconcerned with tresses and oblivious to your face, I know not what it is that I am seeking.'
