English translation

At night, when the darkness of the bead of clay struck, Setting up a pitch-black tent from the conical shadow, The stars made of silver and meteors of pure gold Fashioned pegs and ropes for it. Like a latticed cage of musk-color, The world became narrow for the bird of my heart. I tore open this narrow cage upon myself, And set my foot upon the vault of the heavens. I found a world beyond the previous world, Far beyond anything that thought can reach. Reason was dismissed from gathering its facts, And imagination was powerless to measure it. Light upon light was the lamp of its sanctuary, Grace upon grace was the cloud of its generosity. The stones of its Batha (Mecca) were all jewel-bearing, The clouds of its desert were all jewel-showering. So many pearls and gems showered upon my head, That the thread of my endurance snapped. I felt it a pity that from that hidden treasure, I should not benefit and scatter its benefits. I made the ear of my soul a pearl oyster, And filled the pocket of my heart with gems. I returned to my first stepping-place, Having firmly resolved to arrange these pearls in order. Whatever pearls and gems I gathered from there, I pierced them all with the diamond of contemplation. Many dawns did I bring to evening, And many evenings, like the twilight, I swallowed my own blood (suffered greatly). Necklace by necklace I bound them together, Knot by knot I joined them to one another. It became a complete rosary for the righteous, And I named it 'Subhat al-Abrar' (The Rosary of the Pious). The celestial beings reached out their hands to it, Claiming, 'We sing Your praises.' Its beads steal away the beads of wisdom, Its knots untie the knots of heaven. The thread of that circle is the center of faith, The wick of the candle of the chamber of certainty. The substance of each of its knots is from a different mine, Adorning a different shop. The count of its knots reaches forty, Each of which severs the knot of ignorance from the heart. It is a forty-day retreat (Arba'in) whereby the doors of spiritual openings Are opened from it to the sanctuary of the soul. If this rosary of fortune and honor Should fall into your hand from the turning of days, Make it a collar for your neck and a pendant for your ear, And do not sell it even for two hundred strings of pearls. Perhaps you too will be counted like the rosary, And your hand will reach the head of the thread of the affair. The kohl-colored, blue-clad heaven, Deceit-selling like the children of time, Holding the rosary of the Pleiades in its hand, Wished to break the pearls of this rosary. I said, 'This thread of jewels in your hand, Which is the crystal currency of your oyster shell— Although it is very brilliant and light-shedding, The light of this rosary is two hundred fold. The light of that one took over the face of the earth, The light of this one took over the realm of religion. The light of that one brightened the eye of the world, The light of this one brightened the eye of the soul. Although that one is a pearl of the ancient sea, This one is a newly-fashioned pearl in the casket of speech. If that one is of high rank in form, The spiritual elevation of this one is preferred. Although that one comes before in the thread of time, When you count them, this one is greater. Although no one's hand can reach there, Many a hand shall benefit from this one. Although that one is a compatriot of the moon and the sun, This one is a guide to the Eternal Sun.' When the ear of heaven heard these words, It went spinning in ecstasy at my speech. It said, 'Indeed, you have brought an exalted composition! May God reward you beautifully, O Jami! May the moon and stars be the pearls of your thread, May the tablet of the sun be the path traversed by your reed-pen! As long as the clay bead remains in its place, May the rosary of your poetry be pointed out in renown!'
