English translation
The water of that garden kindles faith, And the heat of this burns the harvest of belief. In speech, no one is in need of gold; Indeed, the gold coin obtained its currency from speech. O, how many locks are there in this two-doored palace, Whose key cannot be fashioned from gold! But when they adorn the lips with the magic of speech, They open that knot in a single breath. O You to whom the bond of sincerity is strong, And to whom the robe of the grace of speech is specially given! The ocean of meaning is filled with pearls by speech, Each one an earring for the ear of artistry. In the crystal oyster of the ancient sphere, There is no noble pearl better than speech. Speech is the sound of Gabriel's wing, And is life-bestowing like the breath of Israfil. Speech has descended from the Sublime Throne; It has come to the earth for the pure. There is no gem in the mine better than it, Nor any art in the realm of possibility superior to it. The scroll of existence was folded through it, And man became human because of it. The virtue of the pen and the honor of the book are due to it, And the warmth of the intellect's gathering is because of it. If there were no newly-written speech, The Tablet and Pen would not have become the Tablet and Pen. The Pen and Tablet are at the service of speech, By day and night, they are the designs and ornaments of speech. Through speech, the name of everyone is made alive, And through speech, the raw and immature are made mature. The heart that is thirsty for the water of speech— Both the mature and the raw are ruined by speech. Our temperament is cheerful from thinking of it; Joyful is the one whose profession is speech! At night, when our back is bent in contemplation of speech, And we have made the crown of our head a companion to our feet, We are the ring of the seal of truthfulness and certainty, The heart being the bezel, and the word of speech the engraving on the bezel. Sometimes it rides the steed of Jamshid beneath its thigh, Sometimes it brings retinues from India to Rome. The ear gazes at that majesty of Jamshid, And the eye grazes on this perfume of India. Under this circle without beginning or end, One cannot praise speech except through speech itself. Praisers who ascend to the heavens Are in need of speech at the time of praise. Except for speech, which is designated with absolute richness, It is itself the praise, the praiser, and the praised. When speech set out on its journey, It drew both its strength and sustenance from itself. It placed its baggage upon the mount of mystery, And set its foot upon the dome of miracles. It surpassed the value of all expensive things, And erased the scrolls of those of magical eloquence. The bearer of the secret of the divine trust is speech, And the guide on the path of religious law is speech. The Sacred Law found its decree of perfection from it, And through it, gained immunity against decline. The fundamental point of exposition is made by it, And the flowing fountain of secondary branches is set in motion by it. A flower from the garden of loyalty has fallen, And has suspended itself in the breeze of the breath. Its fragrance has reached the sense of smell of the ear, And the speaking lip has named it speech. From this flower, the meadow of the heart is made fresh, And the nightingale of longing is loud-voiced. We, who are ashamed before its face, Turn our faces toward this little garden in search of its scent. Our pillow is laid upon its fragrance, And our lament is born of running and searching after it. The manifestation of beauty is due to its description, And the coin of love is minted by its money-changing. Where speech boasts of refinement, What wonder if there is silence from silent gold? Its copper is better than ten-fold pure gold; Mentioning gold on its path is a deviation. Speech and magic are in the same harmony, Just as gold and orpiment are of the same color. Speech receives its water from the spring of the soul, While shining gold receives its luster from the spark of fire.
