English translation

O you whose foot is bound by the causes of the world, how long will you remain held back from the path by this chain? Break this chain from your foot, so that you may catch up with the caravan. The caravan has found its way to the Ultimate Cause, while you have firmly pressed your foot in intermediary causes. If you are not a spider by your base nature, how long will you spin the web of causes? The cause is the veil over the face of the Causer; love for the veil is indeed strange for a wise person. Clinging to causes is like climbing a date palm, only to tremble over your own pursuit of causes. Lest you fall down from the top of the palm tree, make inactivity your trade and do not move your feet. Perhaps you may gather the fruit of well-being, without having to throw a clod of earth to bring down a pear. He who brought your essence into being anew is He; your description and action are recorded by Him. His light has been the guide for your path; His grace has become the guarantor of your sustenance. It is sheer ignorance to turn your face away from Him, seeking sustenance while He is your guarantor. As long as the day illuminates the world, no day shall be without daily sustenance. Remember how your mother was for a lifetime the oyster shell for your pearl. She kept your nourishment ready without your asking; she nurtured you with the blood of her heart. From the womb you moved to her embrace; you drank her pure milk from her breast. When you grew strong from the nourishment of milk, you began receiving food from the bowl and the table. You ate from the table of good fortune for years, without any worry for your daily bread. Once the worry of your sustenance clung to your soul, water poured from your eyes and blood dripped from your heart. Since you brought your own hands and feet into action, you brought loss upon your own affairs. You fell, due to seeking excess, into the snare of causes from a state of causeless peace. Sometimes, through your earnings, you became a worshiper of self; you became calloused-handed from the labor of your right hand. You consumed a hundred drops of blood from those blisters, yet your sustenance did not increase at all. Sometimes you made plans for trade, and you plundered all the cash in your house. Either a thief counted your dirhams in the desert, or a wave carried them away from your palm in the sea. Sometimes you dug the earth for farming, and threw your yield onto the ground. From the scattered seeds in the soil, nothing was gained except a scattered and distracted heart. Sometimes you became a prisoner in the hands of the self; you laid your head at the threshold of kings and princes. You saw everyone to be viler than yourself, and their faces more wretched than yours. Behold, launch a manly attack! Tear your heart away from this palace full of myths. Seeking causes is lowliness of ambition; abandoning causes is high-mindedness. Step upward from this low step; lay your hand upon 'I have put my trust in God'. Leave your affairs to God, for I do not see any better course of action for you. Who is there besides Him to handle your affairs, and shower the cash of your desires upon you? Trust the All-Knowing, for He is the absolute Doer of all deeds; He is the facilitator of the work of every artisan. Affliction comes toward you from Him, and from affliction His affection is the only refuge. Be single-minded in seeking His refuge; turn your face away from all else, and be with Him. Straighten the foundation of your intention; seek out the source of your security. So that you may remain tranquil from every anxiety, and safe in every place of calamity. The thorn of the desert will yield to you the fragrance of the rose; the rose of peace will blossom from the thorn of conflict.
