English translation
O you who, with black hair, out of pride, Are repulsed by the company of white-haired elders, Do not turn your face from white to blackness, Do not tear away the divine light in vain amusements. You are a child, and the hair of the elder is white like milk; How strange is the aversion of children to milk! You are a black crow in this wilderness of fear; How will this white falcon leave you safe? Do not rely on the provisions of youth; Do not do whatever you are capable of doing, as much as you can. Even if your arm is like iron, And even if the skin on your body is chainmail, The hand of destiny will turn your iron into wax, And the sword of fate will rip your chainmail apart. You do not bend your back for God; Do not boast of your hard bow, O weak of faith! When your great strength diminishes, Even if your stature is straight like an arrow, it will bend. Before whom the deceitful heaven will shape Your back like a bow and your body like a bowstring. Be bent like a bow in pursuit of obedience; Choose a corner away from the path of those who praise. Open the path of self-discipline upon your body; Decrease from your body and increase in your soul. The wayfarer of the path is better off with a lean body; For a horse that is fat cannot run fast. Before your back is bent like the elders of the path, Walk straight behind the spiritual guides of the path. Since the elders are the commanders on the front line of religion, Be a captive bound to the saddle-straps of these commanders. Until you become captive to them, How is it possible for you to reach mature old age? Girding your loin in service at the door of any spiritual master Is better than having the crown of lordship on your head. The base of that crown is exceedingly high; The belt of service is the lasso to reach its battlements. The mountain, which has found a hundred mines of gems, Has obtained its lofty crown from its belt. Cast out the rebelliousness of the letter 'Kaf' from your head, And like the letter 'Mim', tie a knot on your waist. Fall at the feet of the light-shadowed elder, And from his pearl, become a priceless treasure. When you assist him with your service, You are actually doing that assistance for yourself. When you pour water on his hands for ablution, You are washing the face of your own good fortune. When you remove a stone from his path, By that, you make the scale of your good deeds heavier. When you place his empty shoes before his feet, You will rub your own shoes upon the vault of heaven. The water skin that you carry in his company Will let you drink water from the Fountain of Life. Sweep the dust of his path clean with your eyelashes, So that the eye of your soul may be adorned with collyrium. Carry the saddle-cover of his kingdom on your shoulder, So that the veil of Divine generosity may cover your faults. Until you become an elder like the masters of the path, Do not let go of the skirt of service. Do not seek the station of elders in your youth, And do not tread the path of devotion with mere wishes. I fear that station will not suit you, And you will also be left deprived of the proper conduct of your youth.
