زنده دلی از صف افسردگان
رفت به همسایگی مردگان

پشت ملامت به عمارات کرد
روی ارادت به مزارات کرد

حرف فنا خواند ز هر لوح خاک
روح بقا جست ز هر روح پاک

گشتی ازین سگ منشان تیز تگ
همچو تگ آهوی وحشی ز سگ

کارشناسی پی تفتیش حال
کرد ازو بر سر راهی سؤال

کین همه از زنده رمیدن چراست
رخت سوی مرده کشیدن چراست

گفت بلندان به مغاک اندراند
پاک نهادان ته خاک اندراند

مرده دلانند به روی زمین
بهر چه با مرده شوم همنشین

همدمی مرده دهد مردگی
صحبت افسرده دل افسردگی

زیر گل آنان که پراکنده اند
گرچه به تن مرده به جان زنده اند

مرده دلی بود مرا پیش ازین
بسته هر چون و چرا پیش ازین

زنده شدم از نظر پاکشان
آب حیاتست مرا خاکشان

جامی ازین مرده دلان گوشه گیر
گوش به خود دار و ز خود توشه گیر

هر چه درین دایره بیرون توست
گام سعایت زده در خون توست

English translation

A vigilant soul from the ranks of the spiritually cold went to live in the neighborhood of the dead. He turned his back of blame on buildings and turned his face of devotion to tombs. He read the word of annihilation from every tablet of dust, and sought the spirit of eternity from every pure soul. He fled swiftly from these dog-natured people, just as a wild deer runs from a dog. A wise observer, in order to investigate his state, asked him on a path: 'Why is there all this fleeing from the living? Why have you moved your belongings to the dead?' He said: 'The exalted ones are inside the graves, the pure-natured ones are beneath the dust. They are dead-hearted on the surface of the earth; why should I associate with the dead? The companionship of the dead brings deadness; the company of a cold-hearted person brings coldness. Those who are scattered under the clay, though dead in body, are alive in soul. I had a dead heart before this, bound to every 'how' and 'why' before this. I became alive through their pure gaze; their dust is the Water of Life for me.' Jami, isolate yourself from these dead-hearted ones; listen to your own self and gather provisions from yourself. Whatever is outside of you in this circle has stepped out to slander and plot for your blood.
