پیش سلطان عاقبت محمود
که شه تختگاه غزنین بود

پیر زالی ز خطه باورد
خط باوردیان برون آورد

که عوانی ز خلعت دین عور
چشم جانش ز نور ایمان کور

به تغلب گرفت باغش را
ساخت جا کلبه فراغش را

شاه دادش مثال عدل طراز
که عوان ملک او گذارد باز

لیکن آن بد سرشت زشت خصال
تافت گردن از امتثال مثال

گفت مشکل که این عجوز دگر
سوی غزنین کند هوای سفر

بار دیگر عجوز بی سامان
بر زد از ظلم آن عوان دامان

روی در دار ملک غزنین کرد
شیوه دادخواهی آیین کرد

شاه گفتش ببر مثال دگر
کش نباشد ازان مجال گذر

گفت شاها مثال را چه کنم
مایه قیل و قال را چه کنم

آن که اول مثال تو نشنید
خواهد آخر مثال تو بدرید

شه شد از حکم طبع سخت سخن
که رو از غصه خاک بر سر کن

پیرزن گفت با دل صد چاک
که رهی بر سر از چه ریزد خاک

خاک بهتر به فرق سلطانی
که ندارد نفاذ فرمانی

گرچه خوانند شاه و سلطانش
گوش ننهد کسی به فرمانش

شه چو بشنید قول آن دلریش
شد پشیمان از سخت گویی خویش

بحلی خواسته زو به صد خجلی
داد فرمان ز بعد آن بحلی

که گروهی ز رحم گردن تاب
سختدل چون فرشتگان عذاب

گرمخویی کنند و دم سردی
در حق آن عوان باوردی

همچو دزدان کشند بر دارش
بلکه همچون سگان به دیوارش

با چنین خواریش چو خون ریزند
آن مثالش به گردن آویزند

کان که از حکم شاه سر تابد
پس جزاها کزین بتر یابد

چون سیاست بر این قرار گرفت
ظلمجوی از میان کنار گرفت

نام ظالم خود از جهان گم باد
غیبت او حضور مردم باد

English translation

In the end, before Sultan Mahmud, who was the king of the capital Ghazna, An old woman from the territory of Bavard brought forth a petition of the people of Bavard, Saying that an oppressor, naked of the robe of religion, the eye of whose soul was blind to the light of faith, Had seized her garden through usurpation, and made her cottage of comfort his own dwelling. The King gave her a decree adorned with justice, that the oppressor should return her property to her. But that evil-natured, wicked-featured man turned his neck away from complying with the decree. He said, 'It is unlikely that this old woman would again desire to journey toward Ghazna.' Once again, the helpless old woman gathered up her skirts from the oppression of that tyrant, Turned her face toward the capital city of Ghazna, making the practice of seeking justice her custom. The King told her, 'Take another decree, from which he will have no way of evasion.' She said, 'O King, what shall I do with a decree? What shall I do with this source of useless dispute? He who did not heed your first decree will surely tear up your last decree.' Out of his natural disposition, the King spoke harshly, saying, 'Go, pour dust on your head out of grief!' The old woman, with a heart in a hundred pieces, said, 'Why should a servant pour dust on her head? Dust is better suited on the head of a sultan whose command has no force of execution, Even though they call him king and sultan, if no one lends an ear to his command.' When the King heard the words of that sore-hearted woman, he became remorseful for his harsh speech. Requesting her forgiveness with a hundred embarrassments, he issued a command after that pardon, That a group of men who turn their necks away from mercy, hard-hearted like the angels of punishment, Should show severity and wrath toward that oppressor of Bavard, And hang him on a gallows like thieves, or rather, hang him against the wall like dogs, And with such ignominy, when they shed his blood, they should hang that decree around his neck, Saying: 'He who turns away from the king's command shall receive punishments worse than this.' When punishment was established in this manner, the seeker of oppression stepped aside from the midst. May the name of the oppressor itself be lost from the world, and may his absence be the presence of the people.
