مردم دیده روشن خردان
بحر دانش همه بین همه دان

بس که در مدرسه ها رنج علوم
برد شد حاصل وی گنج علوم

لیک ازان گنج بجز رنج ندید
بویی از سر حقیقت نشنید

روی همت به صفاکیشان کرد
کسب علم از کتب ایشان کرد

گرچه عمری به سر آن راه سپرد
ره ازان نیز به مقصود نبرد

در ره عشق نشد صاحبدل
گوهر دل نشد او را حاصل

ناگهان نیر اقبال بتافت
ره سوی احمد غزالی یافت

رشته عهد به غزالی بست
سر این رشته اش افتاد به دست

بود در صحبت وی روزی بیست
پس همه عمر به بهروزی زیست

یافت بینا بصری از رویش
برد روشندلی از پهلویش

از قفس طایر روحش پر زد
وز بصر نور دلش سر بر زد

ما رأی شیئا الا و رأی
فیه نور الله فی ظل سوی

از خدا کون و مکان را پر یافت
وز یکی هر دو جهان را پر یافت

دید یک واجب ممکن برقع
نور او طالع و ممکن مطلع

ظلمت خویش در آن نور بیافت
بلکه خود را همگی نور شناخت

English translation

The pupil of the eye of the bright-minded, The ocean of knowledge, all-seeing and all-knowing. So much labor did he endure in the schools of sciences, That his harvest became a treasure of sciences. Yet from that treasure he saw nothing but trouble, And heard not a scent of the secret of truth. He turned the face of his aspiration toward the pure-spirited, And sought knowledge from their books. Though he spent a lifetime traveling that path, He still did not find his way to the goal thereby. On the path of love, he did not become possessor of a heart; The jewel of the heart was not attained by him. Suddenly the luminary of fortune shone, And he found his way to Ahmad Ghazali. He tied the thread of covenant to Ghazali, And the end of this thread fell into his hand. He remained in his company for some twenty days, And thereafter lived his whole life in prosperity. He obtained a seeing eye from his face, And gained an enlightened heart from his side. From its cage, the bird of his soul took flight, And from his sight, the light of his heart burst forth. 'He saw nothing but that he saw In it the light of God under the shadow of otherness.' He found space and time filled with God, And from the One, he found both worlds filled. He saw the one Necessary Being behind the veil of the possible, His light rising, and the possible being the place of rising. He found his own darkness within that light; Nay, he recognized himself entirely as light.
