حاتم آن بحر جود و کان عطا
روزی از قوم خویش ماند جدا

اوفتادش گذر به قافله ای
دید اسیری به پای سلسله ای

پیش آمد اسیر بهر گشاد
خواست زو فدیه تا شود آزاد

حاتم آنجا نداشت هیچ به دست
بر وی از بار آن رسید شکست

حالی از لطف پای پیش نهاد
بند او را به پای خویش نهاد

ساخت زان بند سخت آزادش
اذن رفتن به جای خود دادش

قوم حاتم ز پی رسیدندش
چون اسیران به بند دیدندش

فدیه او ز مال او دادند
پای او هم ز بند بگشادند

English translation

Hatim, that ocean of generosity and mine of bounty, One day became separated from his tribe. He happened to pass by a caravan, He saw a captive with chains on his feet. The captive came forward seeking release, Asking him for a ransom so that he might be set free. Hatim had nothing on hand there, He was heartbroken by the burden of this plight. Out of grace, he immediately stepped forward, And placed the captive's fetters upon his own feet. Thus he freed him from those harsh bonds, And gave him permission to go to his own place. Hatim's tribe reached him afterward, And when they saw him bound like captives, They paid his ransom from his own wealth, And released his feet from the fetters as well.
