English translation

Ruzbahan, the horseman of the arena of love, The king of the palace of love for the people of Fars, Arrived before the curtain of a dwelling, From behind that curtain, he heard a voice, Where, out of love and motherly affection, A mother said to her sun-faced daughter: 'O you whose beauty exceeds all the beautiful ones, Do not step out of the palace at every moment. I fear that due to the abundance of seeing you, The longing of your buyer will diminish. The price of any merchandise that is abundant, Even if it be like life itself, becomes cheap.' When the Sheikh listened to that whisper, The secret of love welled up from his heart. He cried out: 'O old crone, Consider this root of desire uprooted from your heart! Beauty is not that which remains hidden, Even if there are veils world upon world. Beauty that is behind the veil of concealment Is wounded by the desire of being seen. Until its veil of concealment is torn, It cannot find a place in the sight of the beholder. The manifestation that demands display at every moment Is the share of the heart that gazes. Until it becomes mad with the grief of love, The majesty of beauty will not become manifest. O Jami, if you are a living beholder, And a sitter in the ranks of lovers, Take collyrium from the dust of love's footsteps, And die alive under the banner of love.'
