بود شوخی نشسته بر لب بام
با فروزان رخی چو ماه تمام

بر شکسته کلاه گوشه ناز
گشته نازش هلاک اهل نیاز

پیری آمد سفید موی شده
پشتی از بار دل دو توی شده

روی خود را به خاک می مالید
وز دل دردناک می نالید

کای پسر از تو سینه چاک شدم
رحمتی کز غمت هلاک شدم

پیش ازان کز غمت بمیرم زار
حاجت من به یک نگاه برآر

گفت با او پسر به عشوه گری
من که باشم که تو به من نگری

در برابر نگر برادر من
که به خوبیست صد برابر من

پیر مسکین چو آن طرف نگریست
تا ببیند که در برابر کیست

دست زد آن به خون خلق دلیر
وز لب بامش اوفکند به زیر

کان که ما را به عشق نام برد
در رخ دیگری چرا نگرد

جامی از غیر دوست دیده بدوز
ور نه از دیده خون فشان شب و روز

گر نه از وصل بهره ور باشی
باری از هجر نوحه گر باشی

English translation

There was a playful youth sitting on the edge of the roof, With a glowing face like a full moon. Having tilted the corner of his hat in coquetry, His coquetry became the destruction of those in need. An old man arrived, his hair turned white, His back bent double from the burden of his heart. He rubbed his face in the dust, And groaned from a painful heart: 'O boy, my chest is torn apart because of you, Have mercy, for I have perished from grief over you. Before I die miserably from your grief, Fulfill my desire with just a single glance.' The boy said to him coquettishly, 'Who am I that you should look at me? Look straight ahead at my brother, Who in beauty is a hundred times more than me.'
