بخش ۱۱۴ - قصه زاهد و عارف / Section 114 - The Story of the Ascetic and the Gnostic

زاهدی می گذشت در راهی
فاسقی را بدید ناگاهی

در گناه عظیم افتاده
ره به سوی جحیم بگشاده

گفت یارب بگیر سخت او را
ده به سیلاب فتنه رخت او را

کشتی اش را فکن به موج خطر
تا نپیچد ز خط حکم تو سر

عارفی آن دعا شنید از دور
با دعا گوی گفت کای مغرور

چه گرفتاریش ازین افزون
که نهد پا ز شرع و دین بیرون

چه بلا زین بتر تواند بود
که بود زو خدای ناخشنود

گشته مسکین به موج دریا غرق
تو چه سنگش همی زنی بر فرق

گر تو را دست هست دستش گیر
دست جان هوا پرستش گیر

ور نه باری میفکن از پایش
جان به تیر دعا مفرسایش

English translation

An ascetic was passing along a path, Suddenly he saw a sinner, Fallen into a great sin, With the way to hell opened before him. He said, 'O Lord, seize him harshly! Cast his belongings into the flood of tribulation! Throw his ship into the wave of danger, So that he may not turn his head from the line of Your command.' A gnostic heard that prayer from afar, And said to the supplicant, 'O arrogant one! What affliction of his is greater than this: That he steps outside of the sacred law and religion? What calamity could be worse than this: That God is displeased with him? The poor soul is already drowned in the waves of the sea, Why are you throwing stones at his head? If you have the ability, take his hand, Take the hand of his passion-worshiping soul. If not, at least do not trip him up, Do not weary his soul with the arrow of hostile prayer.'
