پاره دوزی بود در اقصای ری
مطمئن بر پاره دوزی رای وی

با خمیده پشتی از بار عیال
داشت مشتی طفلکان خردسال

بود بر دلق معاش خویشتن
روز و شب از پاره دوزی وصله زن

چون رسیدی میوه های سال نو
خاطرش بودی به هر میوه گرو

سوی اهل خود به صد گونه حیل
آمدی هم جیب ازان پر هم بغل

پیش ایشان ریختی آن را دلیر
تا بخوردندی همه زان میوه سیر

بعد ازان گفتی که ای افتادگان
بر فراش محنت و غم زادگان

گر فتد صد بار ازین میوه به چنگ
جمله را اینست طعم و بوی و رنگ

ترک آز و آرزومندی کنید
طبع را مایل به خرسندی کنید

من چو خاکم زیر پای فقر پست
بیش ازینم برنمی آید ز دست

English translation

There was a cobbler in the far reaches of Rey, Whose mind was content with mending. With a back bent under the burden of dependents, He had a handful of young children. To patch the tattered cloak of his livelihood, He was sewing patches day and night. Whenever the new year's fruits arrived, His heart was pledged to every fruit. Toward his family, by a hundred kinds of tricks, He would return with pockets and arms full of them. He would boldly pour them before them, So that they would all eat their fill of that fruit. Thereafter he would say: 'O you fallen ones, Born upon the bed of hardship and sorrow! If this fruit should fall into your hands a hundred times, This is the very same taste, scent, and color for all of them. Abandon greed and desire, And make your nature inclined toward contentment. I am like dust, humble beneath the feet of poverty, No more than this is within my power.'
