Original content

English translation

At night, Ali ibn Muwaffaq, that king of religion, Went in a dream toward the highest paradise. He saw a delicate and pure-natured person Standing on the pathway to paradise. One by one, he looks at their faces, Treading the path of rejection and acceptance. He summons the felicitous to paradise, And drives the wretched away from paradise. After that, he saw, with a knower of God, Two angels seated at a table, Placing for him, from the pure delicacies of heaven, Morsels into his mouth from left and right. After that, with a thousand fold dignity and beauty, He found his way into the pavilions of majesty. He saw beneath the Throne a bewildered soul, Who had shaken his skirts free of both worlds, Having taken his place in the theater of unity, With his eyes fixed on the witnessing of God. He neither shuts his eyes of witnessing, Nor bends his back of steadfastness. He said to himself in the middle of that night, 'Who are these three individuals, O Lord?' A voice from the unseen said: 'This one who is enamored In the witnessing of God is Ma'ruf [Karkhi], Who, free and detached from hope and fear, Worshipped the Truth out of love. And those two whom you saw at first Are Bishr al-Hafi and Ahmad ibn Hanbal.' O Jami, break the bonds from whatever exists, And bind your heart to that heart-severing Beloved, In the hope that the decree of 'As you live, so shall you die' (Kama Ta'ishu Tamut) May grant you sustenance from Him after death.
