بخش ۴۵ - حکایت آن عالم در چاه افتاده که دست به شاگرد خود نداد تا جزای آخرت از دست ندهد / Section 45 - The Story of the Scholar Fallen into a Well Who Did Not Give His Hand to His Student Lest He Lose His Reward in the Hereafter

Original content

English translation

A scholar, having emerged from the well of ignorance, Fell into a physical well along the path. No helper gave him a hand on his way; He remained on that road like Joseph in the well. Like a shadow, he rested at the bottom of the well, When he saw the shadow of a person at the top of the well. He cried out: 'O traveler, Do not turn away from the path of kindness and chivalry. Set the foot of chivalry at the top of the well, And give a hand to the one who has fallen off the path.' The traveler came to the top of the well and said: 'Give me your hand, O companion of grief and sigh.' The scholar said: 'First, from your general grace, Give me news of your title and name.' The traveler said: 'I am your humble disciple; On the path of faith, I am the dust of your threshold.' The scholar said: 'Heaven forbid that from this lowly well, I should clasp my hand in yours today! I, who have girded my loins for teaching, Am free from any motive of gain or loss. My effort is born of wisdom, And is purely for the sake of Divine grace. How could I taint it with any other reward, And increase its pollution with self-interest? I shall sit imprisoned at the bottom of this well, Until some disinterested helper takes my hand. Since the station of my knowledge rose high, Nothing besides that is pleasing to me.' The ambition of Jami, having scaled the heights, Gained approval from the honor of knowledge. He chose knowledge from his high nature; Whatever he chose, that alone was sufficient for him.
