Section 31 - The Story of the Ugly Woman Who Found a Blind Buyer and Praised Her Counterfeit Capital Before Him

Original content

English translation

A blind man sought an ugly wife, Spiteful, sarcastic, and ill-tempered. Her face was darker than black jet, And her forehead more wrinkled than a shield. Deaf of ear, bent of back, and squinting of eye, Her silence was vain, her speech nonsensical chatter. One night, coquettishly, she said to that blind man: 'What a pity that my beauty remains hidden from you! My countenance has demanded tribute from the moon, Writing a word of shame upon the ivory tablet. My narcissus eye is the light and eye of the meadow, My tulip cheek puts a scar of envy upon the jasmine. From the description of my stature, shortness Has acquired the renown of the upright cypress.' When the blind man listened to her fable, The blood of his heart welled up from his chest. He said: 'If the state of affairs were thus, And fortune and prosperity were your companions, A seeing person would have held your skirt, And someone else would have sown the seed of passion for you. With all these seeing people near and far, No one places a mirror in front of a blind man. If my eyes were not so blind, You would not have opened the head of such a claim. The closedness of my eyes to your features Has opened for you the door of your boasting.' O Jami, if you have the coin of perfection, And you have beauty within the veils of the unseen, Display it to the eyes of those with insight, Do not place it in the view of those who lack vision. Otherwise, with resolve, knock on the door of justice, And draw a line of error over the page of the boaster.
