English translation

At the gateway of the court or upon the path, A seeker of justice will call out to me with groans and sighs. I would incline my ear to his cry, And grant him justice as the righteous do. Or when the cry of a needy soul arises, Who has suffered plunder from the occurrences of time, I would arrange his affairs through generosity, So that he does not return empty-handed from my door. There was a king who was intelligent, But the passage of his ear was closed to hearing. Neither did physicians know a cure, Nor could wise men find a remedy. He displayed measureless grief, And manifested countless distress. A well-wisher, prominent in virtue and knowledge, Said, 'O king of praised character, If one of the ten senses is missing from you, Why is your heart bound by sorrow? What is all this turmoil and agitation for, And this forsaking of food and sleep? Be grateful that you feel no pain from it, And no dust of sorrow is upon your mind. You are delivered from the torment of those with harsh voices, And you have escaped the snare of slanderers' deceit. The light of truth shines sufficiently upon your heart, Let the path of a thousand lies be shut. If the ear is gone, let intellect remain, And let the communion with angels remain.' The king said, 'O you whose heart is content with wisdom, And by whom the enlightened mind of the wise is nurtured, My ear is not desired by me For the voices of musicians to enter, Nor that I should align with the melody of mirth, Or hear the sound of the lute and the tune of the harp, Nor to harbor dance in my inner self, And set my foot upon the carpet of joy. Rather, my ear was of use to me So that if harm should reach any person...'
