English translation

A fickle man arrived at a road, And beheld a full moon showing off her splendor. Their veil formed a halo around the moon, Their cloak pitched a tent over the moon and the sun. The movement of her anklet sang a melody, And her tresses trailing behind released musk. He let out a cry: 'O self-worshipping one! Do not quicken your pace, for I am lost! I have become a companion to cries because of you; Take the path of generosity and come to my rescue!' When the youthful idol saw his passion, And heard all that clamor and agitation, She bloomed like a smiling rose from his breath, Opened her sweet bud of lips and said: 'My sister is arriving just behind me; One hair of hers is worth a hundred like me! There is no talk of the beautiful where she is; Who am I, and who are a hundred like me where she is? With all the honor of my God-given beauty, My master has gone to be her student.' When the simple-hearted man heard that temptation, He forgot the proper rule of devotion. He fell into error because of her words, And turned the eye of fidelity away from her sight. He gazed down the path many times, But saw only a distant path and no one on the road. Once again he opened his lips to speak, And began to plead and supplicate before her. That moon cried out: 'O idle-talker! You had better turn your face from this vanity! The sanctuary of desire is but one; He who seeks that sanctuary is not double-minded. The condition of seeking is to abandon duality, And to turn the face of devotion to the One. Since you have turned your face from the One to two, This is a strange new custom you have brought! How long must we suffer harm from the double-sighted? O Jami, close the eye of your heart to them! If there is no dust of doubt in your eye, Why is your baggage not settled in the One out of both worlds?'
