بخش ۳۹ - حکایت عاشقی که دفع گمان اغیار را وصف معشوق خود در لباس آفتاب و ماه و غیر آن کردی / Section 39 - The Tale of a Lover Who, to Dispel the Suspicion of Strangers, Described His Beloved in the Garment of the Sun, the Moon, and Other Things

Original content

English translation

A lover was sitting in a corner, Engaged in conversation with himself. At every moment, he would construct a new story, And fashion an unheard-of tale. Sometimes he spoke of the moon, sometimes of the sun, Sometimes of the rose petal and the hyacinth veil. Sometimes he spoke of the cypress's graceful stature, Sometimes of the speck of dust rising from the soil of her foot. An ignorant person was listening from afar; His mind recoiled from what he deemed nonsensical talk. He said to him: 'O you whose name is associated with love, A lover should speak of his beloved! Why should a lover speak of other people's names? Why pierce the pearl of describing strangers?' He replied: 'O you who are far from the sign of lovers, You cannot comprehend the language of lovers! By the sun and the moon, my purpose is my beloved; The secret of this is clear to those of subtle understanding. When I mentioned the rose, I desired the grace of her face; When the hyacinth was mentioned, I desired her hair. What is the cypress but her graceful stature? And I am the speck of dust grown from the soil of her feet. If you become aware of my language, You would hear nothing from me but the story of her love.'
