English translation

A lover had the scar of a heart-enkindling beloved, And in his heart, he had a burning from her fire. For lifetimes he was intoxicated by the sight of her, Bound in the bond of his fidelity to her. Moment by moment he saw a different manifestation, Plucking another flower from her beauty. Since cruelty is the creed of the heavens, And separating companions is its custom, It sought to ruin their home, And make them dwell in separate streets. The morning of fortune vanished, And the day of companionship turned into a dark night. They resigned their hearts to separation, And stood upon the path to say farewell. The love-struck lover raised a cry, Shedding tears of heart's blood upon his cheeks. But only one of his eyes shed tears, While the other remained dry from the fire of his heart. He drove a nail into the eye that had not wept, So that it would never again behold the beloved's countenance. He was filled with indignation that the eye which did not shed Tears when the thread of companionship was broken Should ever look upon her beauty again, Or even have her image pass through its sight. After some time they were reunited, And drank the goblet of union together. For years they were companions, And intimate soulmates in a single corner. Yet he never opened that eye to her face, Nor did he grant it the fortune of beholding her.
