Original content

English translation

The son of Muwaffaq, who by the grace of God, Took the lead from every successful elder, Traversed the desert of the Kaaba many times, And suffered much hardship on that path. One day, since his heart was constricted and heavy, He struck his head against a stone at the gate of the Kaaba. He said: 'O God, after every trial and affliction, Cast a glance of mercy upon me! I have traveled the path of Hajj and Umrah many times; I have gone for You, not for anyone else. My heart has been pledged to Your loyalty; Breathless and headlong I have run in pursuit of You. Yet from this journey, I have no harvest in my hand— Neither a serene state of mind, nor a peaceful heart. I know not at all what my condition is, Nor what is the source of fortune for my destiny.' At night, when he fell asleep in this pain, A calling came to him from the Incomparable Divine: 'O you who on My path have made your head a foot, And because of this foot have been exalted above all! Had I not desired you, how would I have Granted you a way toward this sacred land? Whoever does not turn in inclination toward Him, How could he ever be guided toward Him? It is enough of a harvest for you that I desired you, And adorned your inner being with longing for Myself. I gave you passage to My own house, And did not send you to the door of anyone else.' O Lord, since bounty is Yours, The eyes of all are upon the door of Your grace. Though Jami is not one of enlightened heart, He hopes for such a harvest from You.
