Original content

English translation

When the turn of talk and chatter came to its end, The drummer beat the drum of departure. The marshals placed his golden litter Upon the backs of the camels, whose body The camels bore over plain and mountain, And from that litter their humps became a mountain of gold. By white day and by black evening, The army's commanders, the trustees of the road, Raised sighs at the tyranny of time, And set out on the road toward the homeland. Making two stages into one, they galloped, Enduring it with wounded, weary bodies. Hastening, they neither counted the night as night, Nor sought any rest from the day. After some time upon that hard road, They cast down their baggage in their own realm. This news reached the ears of the Romans, And they raised their clamor to the summit of the heavens. Following the Egyptians, at this news, All the launderers dyed their garments in indigo mourning. In Alexandria, his mother, Whose guide was the light of wisdom, When she heard this heart-burning tale, Set the world ablaze with the flame of her sighs. From the weeping of heart and eye she sank into blood, And stepped out from the abode of patience. She wished to tear open the collar of her soul, To rend the garment of strength and endurance, To make the veil of dawn black like night, At the hand of fate to beat her breast with a stone, To scratch her fresh cheek with her nails, To make her rouge anew from the blood of her heart, With the blow of a slap in that ordeal To give the jasmine of her face the hue of the lotus, To pull the musky hair from her head strand by strand, And to lament bitterly over herself, To cast the silken garment from her body, And make a collar for her neck of woolen sackcloth. Yet Alexander's letter Came to her aid in that manner and her wailing. She acted according to the content of his letter, And made her nature an ally to patience and wisdom. She commanded that the people of that land and region, Whether from Syria and Egypt or from Russia and Rome, Go out to meet his army, And they placed his golden litter upon their necks. They concealed their hearts, full of grief and pain, And in Alexandria laid him in its earth like a treasure. When they had finished the task of his burial, The sages composed books of wisdom; From the treasury of wisdom they scattered jewels, Then recited them to his mother behind a veil. When they addressed her from behind the veil, From behind the veil they heard a fine reply.
