Section 9 - The Tale of Dhul-Nun and Abu Yazid, May God Sanctify Their Spirits

Original content

English translation

Dhul-Nun sent a message to Bayazid: 'O you who have taken peaceful rest in sweet sleep! Raise your head, for the hour has grown late; Set forth, for the caravan has passed.' Bayazid replied to him: 'A true man in the arena of peace and strife is one Who goes to sleep at night before everyone else, Yet reaches his destination in the morning. He lays his head on the pillow in separation from the Beloved, And wakes up in His presence at dawn. But in the assembly of the seekers, This sleep is indeed the sleep of the vigilant. One who has never closed his eyes to sleep throughout his life Will not be granted this sleep even for a single moment.'
