Section 125 - The Tale of Hakim Sanai, May Allah Have Mercy on Him, Who Was Reciting This Couplet at the Time of His Death

Original content

English translation

I turned back from speech because there is no meaning in speech and no speech in meaning. When Sanai, the king of the realm of speech, the writer on the instruction board of speech, heaven desired to wash clean the mark of his existence from the board of earth, it cast him onto his bed of affliction, and threw him to the ground like a shadow. While his lips were not yet closed from speech, he was whispering a word to himself. A companion placed an ear to his mouth, and opened his mind's eye to his speech. What was inspired to him from the realm of the heart, was a brief couplet that had this meaning: 'I passed through all modes of speech, but now, I have turned away from them all. On my heart, from all more or less, the letter of regret is the only mark left. Because in this ancient temple of a world, speech is far from meaning, and meaning from speech. Where speech becomes a displayed trap, the prey of meaning does not open its mouth in satisfaction. Where meaning pulls up its skirt in pride, the hand of pleading of speech does not reach it. Where speech is confined in space, the bird of meaning does not spread its wings. Where meaning sets a high footstep, one cannot fashion a lasso out of expressions.' Since the status and worth of speech is such, alas for the nature whose custom is speech. Close your lips, for silence is better; empty your heart, for forgetfulness is better.
