Section 42 - The Tale of Majnun

Original content

English translation

Majnun's love reached such a state That he was delivered from running about and talking. He composed a new song for himself, And began to make love to Love itself. He shook his sleeves of everything new and old, And gave his skirt into the grasp of a thorn-bush. Inwardly soft, like a hedgehog, But outwardly rough and harsh to others. He took up his abode beneath that thorn-bush, And ceased going to the lane of the beloved. When a few days passed in this manner, It crossed Layla's mind many times: 'What has happened to Majnun, That self-lost, infatuated, afflicted one? For his sign is not seen in the desert, Nor does he run alongside the wild deer of the wilderness. He remains far from the herds of wild asses, Nor does he throw excitement into the ranks of the gazelles. For days, I hear no word of his secret from anyone, And at night, his voice does not reach my ears.' In the end, finding no other way, She asked confidants about his condition. They described the story of his pain, And made the reality of his state manifest. One afternoon, to the delight of companions, She found the eyes of the informers asleep. She lined her eyes with the kohl of coquetry, And tore the veil of secrecy from intellect and religion. She put the shoes of charm on her feet, And began to traverse the earth with steps of fidelity. She walked gracefully until she reached Majnun, And cast her shadow over Majnun's head. She cried out: 'O you who benefit from love! Union has cast its shadow, raise your head!' Majnun said: 'Who are you? Reveal yourself! Open your silent lips to explain the secret.' She said: 'I am the one whose wound you suffered, For whose desire you bowed your head. I am the peace of your soul, Layla; I am your eternal Qibla, Layla.' He said: 'Go, go! For I am in such a state That I know nothing but your love. Your love, O wise beauty, Has made such a home in my heart That there is no room left even for you! It is more pleasant for me henceforth to be alone.'
