شاه کرمانی آن مطیع مطاع
که به میدان عشق بود شجاع

هر شبی دیده پر نمک کردی
جگر خود به آن نمک خوردی

ساختی آب دیده را نمک آب
پاک شستی ز دیده سرمه خواب

بعد عمری که چشم او نغنود
یک شبی خواب راحتش بربود

روی جانان به خواب دید آن شب
میوه وصل یار چید آن شب

تخم بی خوابش رسید به بر
آمدش بر جمال یار نظر

گر به بی خوابیش نبودی خوی
به وی این خواب کی نمودی روی

چون به مقصود خود ز خواب رسید
هیچ مقصود به ز خواب ندید

بعد ازان چون زدی به راهی گام
یا گرفتی به منزلی آرام

داشتی بالشی قرین با خویش
که گرش آمدی مجالی پیش

زیر پهلو ز خار و خس رفتی
سر به بالین نهادی و خفتی

خوش بود خواب های بیداران
خوش بود کارهای بیکاران

دیده مشغول خواب و دل بیدار
دست فارغ ز کار و دل در کار

یار بر چشم سر چو گشت عیان
گر بود بسته چشم سر چه زیان

ور بود چشم سر ازو مسدود
گر بود چشم سر گشاده چه سود

English translation

The King of Kirman, that obedient ruler, who in the arena of love was brave. Every night he would make his eyes salty with tears, and feed upon his own heart with that salt. He would turn his tears into salty water, and completely wash away the kohl of sleep from his eyes. After a lifetime in which his eyes did not sleep, one night a peaceful sleep overtook him. He saw the face of the Beloved in his dream that night, and plucked the fruit of union with the Beloved that night. The seed of his sleeplessness bore fruit, and his gaze fell upon the beauty of the Beloved. If he had not been accustomed to sleeplessness, how would this dream have shown its face to him? Since he reached his goal through sleep, he saw no goal better than sleep. Thereafter, whenever he took a step on a path or rested at a lodging place, He kept a pillow close to him, so that if an opportunity arose, He would lay his head on the pillow, even on thorns and weeds, and sleep. How pleasant are the dreams of those who are awake! How pleasant are the deeds of the idle! The eyes are occupied with sleep while the heart is awake; the hand is free from work while the heart is at work. When the Beloved became manifest to the physical eyes, what harm is there if the physical eyes are closed? And if the physical eyes are blocked from Him, what is the benefit if they are open?
