English translation

Saadi, that sweet-singing nightingale of the garden of Shiraz, Who sings tales in the rosegarden of discourse, Perched one night on the tree of God's praise, Displaying magic with his morning melody. He bound together a verse of two hemistiches, Each one a rising dawn for the lights of eternity. The soul found comfort from the beloved's glad tidings, And the light of gnosis shone upon the intellect. A certain mystic, an awake and living-hearted soul, Who harbored a hidden denial toward Saadi, Saw in a dream that the gates of heaven Were opened by a group of angels. They appeared, forming ranks at every gate, Each holding a gift of light in their palm. Turning their backs to the green celestial dome, They faced this dusty earthly temple. With a heart gripped by fear and hope, He asked, 'O swift travelers, where to?' They gave glad tidings: 'At dawn, Saadi Pierced a fresh pearl in praise of God. Lest an evil eye reach him by fate, This deserves to be a necklace for the ear of approval. What we possess is not of his status, Rather, it is due to that subtle point from his spiritual secrets.' The dreamer untied the knot of his denial, And turned toward that sanctuary of the free. He arrived at the door of the Sheikh's monastery, And heard the whispering of the Sheikh from within, Who was wetting his face with the blood of his heart, And repeating that verse to himself.
