بود همچون بوم زاغی روز کور
جا گرفته بر لب دریای شور

بودی از دریای شور آبشخورش
دادی آن شورابه طعم شکرش

از قضا مرغی حواصل نام او
حوصله سر چشمه انعام او

سایه دولت به فرق او فکند
نامدش شورابه دریا پسند

گفت پیش آی ای ز شوری در گله
کآب شیرینت دهم از حوصله

گفت ترسم کآب شیرین چون چشم
طعم آب شور گردد ناخوشم

زآب شیرین مانم و باشد نفور
طبع من ز آبشخور دریای شور

بر لب دریا نشسته روز و شب
در میان هر دو مانم تشنه لب

به که سازم هم به آب شور خویش
تا نیاید رنج بی آبیم پیش

English translation

There was a crow, blind by day like an owl, Who had taken up residence on the shore of the salty sea. His drinking place was from the salty sea; That saltwater tasted like sugar to him. By chance, a bird named Pelican— Whose pouch was a spring of bounty— Cast the shadow of fortune over his head; He did not approve of the saltwater of the sea. He said, 'Come forward, O you who complain of the saltiness, So that I may give you sweet water from my pouch.' He said, 'I fear that when I taste sweet water, The taste of salty water will become unpleasant to me, And I will remain deprived of sweet water, while my nature Will also feel aversion toward my drinking place in the salty sea. Sitting on the shore of the sea day and night, I would remain thirsty-lipped between the two. It is better that I make do with my own salty water, So that the suffering of waterlessness does not come upon me.'
